Messick School

The oringinal Elizabeth Messick County High School was erected in 1908 on Spottswood Avenue at Greer Street. It is the oldest high school in the City of Memphis when the Buntyn area was annexed in 1929. Messick School was always a 1st-12th grade school.

This building was built by Memphis City Schools after the 1929 annexation. It became the high school and the old 1908 building was the elementary.  The picture was taken probably around 1952. This building too was demolished sometime in the 80s.

Didn't Elvis Presley perform in the Messick auditorium around 1956 or 1957?

As a grad and a 12 year student at Messick, all in different grades I might add, :). I have a multitude of memories. I don't remember Elvis performing but I do remember Ed Bruce performing in the auditiorium. Ed was a good songwriter among other things. In the 40s my grandparents owned the building on Greer right across from the main entrance. They used to raise theri vegetables there. It became a small store when I was a student.

Elvis Presley did indeed perform in the old auditurium at Messick. My parents, aunts uncles, brother, sister, cousins, huband,in-laws and two of my children went to Messick. This was in a time that families still stayed close by in the neighborhood.
Berretta's at Park and Highland was our hang out and any disagrrements were settled at Davis Park. usually with a handshake after the dust settled. We siad the Pledge of Alligence and had prayer each morning, at any game or assembly. And we all the better for it.

I was probably in Jr. Hi when I went to a concert in Crump Stadium. I can't remember who I saw though. It's the only memory I have of anything other than football there. Does anyone else remember such an event?

I can remember stepping out onto the ledge outside my homeroom to raise the flag as a ROTC cadet at Messick. As a twelve year club member from the class of 1960, I remember the Elvis performance as well. I left Memphis in 1960 and have only been back to visit since then, but have many fond memories.

I remember Sgt.Garvin teaching map reading. My wife is amazed I still have that skill. I also remember marching east on Spottswood to Davis Park. It seems like we had 15 or 20 companies of ROTC students. I learned woodshop under Mr.Davis, mechanical drawing under Mr. Wild and heartbreak in senior English under Mrs.Greenlee (this was character building time).

I was a 1956 graduate of Messick. I recall the Elvis concert there at around 1955. Attending was optional, and I decided not to attend! Then I heard all the girls screaming and did not understand why. I too remember Sgt. Garvin in ROTC, and marching to Davis Park. And I had MISS Greenlee as a teacher in 3 different grades, the last of which was English in 1955. After having me for three years, she never did learn how to pronounce my last name! My all time favorite teacher was Miss Kenner, who taught speech, and to whom I have been indebted ever since, for teaching me public speaking.

WOW brings back memories. My daddy went to Messick...13 yrs never missed a day just repeated the second grade. Some of the 8 of us Keeton Kids went there too. My brother and one of my sister's had Mrs Bee the same teacher who taught my daddy 2nd grade. Then we moved away but my high school (Hillcrest High School) principal Mr Gilbert went to high school with my daddy at Messick and he was a golden gloves boxing champion.
Memories of walking to Davis park from our home on Ellsworth and passing Messick. Always knew were close to fun when we hit the school. Have to show my girls where their momma went to 1-3 grades

Wow! Notice how many of you were 12 years students. I was also, class of 1958! And many of the teachers had been there for years - the Misses Kenner, Crinkley, Armstrong, and Alice Rogers just to name a few. Some had been there so long that my sister, 10 years older than I, had also had them.

Here's a link to a site about the book, "Elvis Day by Day." It's like a diary for 1955. Scroll down to February 3, the day he was at Messick.

I purchased a piece of old watercolor art in nashville tn by a Messick. I'm trying to locate information about who it is and the history of the painting. Do you have any information on local artists named Messick. The painting is of a white farm house in a field. it is only 4x15". Does anyone have any information you can provide? Thanks.
