There were conveyor belts for grocery pick-up there
and at the Dixiemart on Watkins at Chelsea.

Whattaburger on Frayser Boulevard.

For a brief time in the early 70s, there was a big slide and swinging cages on Frayser Boulevard between Range Line and New Allen. They gave you course burlap bags to slide down on.

The Bachelor and Three was the night spot at the Northgate Shopping center, on the side near the Bowling alley.

I remember the Katz Drug Store sign, a large cat face with a huge tail climbing up the side of the pole. It would kind of freak me out...lol Frayser was a great place to grow up. I also remember the Big Star next to the Ben Franklin store on Watkins.

There was also Fillerburger, replaced by Autozone near Frayser Boulevard and Overton Crossing. And how about Matt's Pizza, where the KFC sits today?

Then there were some of the first video arcades in Memphis: Butch's Arcade, in the far right bay of the little strip center to the left of Top's Barbecue, and later, "Space Port" in Frayser Plaza, as well as "Big Daddy's" just across the street from the Plaza.

Back in the day you could find pretty much anything you needed without leaving Frayser, with department and specialty stores and restaurants right in the area.

This is the coolest... Filler burger they had the BEST Cherry Colas, the real cherry cola. Remember when Kmart opened on Overton Crossing? And of course Yes we all remember Overton Square, Silky Sullivans & Chicago Pizza.

The eating establishment I remember most fondly in the Frayser area was "Pancho's Express". I would always order the taco salad (with the green dressing) and pour voluminous amounts of taco sauce all over it; eating it with my eyes watering, mouth on fire, and enjoying every bite. Kelvin's BBQ moved into the building after Pancho's closed. The only Dairy Queen in the area was further west along Frayser Blvd. The Kroger was on the east side of Range Line road, then moved to the west side. There was a little clothing boutique on Frayser Blvd, right next to the Pizza Hut, called "Cottage of Fashions", which was owned by my uncle. They tore the building down (what else?) and paved it over for more parking. It seems there was a Tops BBQ in the same area.

I lived up on Old Allen Road, first house on the right after La Petite; driving to the Frayser Little Caesar's and back was the way I taught myself how to drive a standard...
