The Treasury

Under the Squiggly Roof!

J.C. Penney owned The Treasury chain of discount stores, which had three locations in Memphis. The discount stores were orginally called Treasure Island but changed due to copyright laws. The zig zag pattern in the roof architecture was reflected in their logo and tagline.

Like today's SuperWalmarts, The Treasury was a department store and grocery store combined. After you purchased your groceries, the bags were placed in plastic tubs, put on a conveyor track, and rolled outside. You drove your car around and bag boys placed your groceries in your car.

The recessions of the 1970s and early 1980s caused J.C. Penney to close around 1981.

I have some memory of the Treasury on Lamar. Around 1976, my mother bought me a Jaws beach towel with me there. I was 8 or 9 at the time. I still have the towel, and it is in somewhat good condition considering it is over 30 years old.

I remember having the cute guys loading the groceries. I thought that was fancy when I was 4 or 5 years old. Those were the days. That is a wonderful place for a big box store.

I remember, in the late 70s, they used to have a parking lot carnival every year at the Treasury on Lamar. My favorite ride was the swings that went around and round while they played "Fly Like an Eagle". It was always fun to watch the purses go flying through the parking lot from that ride.
