Midtown in the 1960s

Street signs in Midtown were concrete posts with the street names written vertically.

Telephone poles had red fire alarm boxes, with a red & white band painted around the pole.

The Pink Palace had a shrunken head, a log with holes you stuck your hand into to try to decide what things were, and stuffed big game on the walls shot by Barry Brooks (whose estate was on the south side of Scenic Highway in Raleigh).

Sears Crosstown had a constant dinging sound over the PA system, apparently some sort of code for security and other staff.

The Memphis Belle was on Central.

Riding the Pippin and The Old Mill at the Fairgrounds. Outside the Fairgrounds was a locomotive you could climb on.

The Memphis Zoo had pony rides and Monkey Island.

Live (temporarily) goldfish won at the Mid South Fair.
