The French Quarter Inn on the northeast
corner of Madison & Cooper, where Soloman Alfred's used to
be. |

Former home of Yosemite Sam's and
the Hot Air Balloon on the northwest corner of
Madison & Cooper. |

The building that houses Bosco's
Restaurant was built in the 1980s for Bombey Bicycle
Club. |

Next door to Bosco's is the little
house that stood in the middle of Overton Square in
its heyday because the lady who lived there refused
to sell. (If she wasn't hard of hearing when
it started, she must have ended up that way.) It's
now part of Paulette's. |

Paulette's, at 2110 Madison, is as
good as ever.
|

Over on the southwest corner of
Madison & Cooper, the former location of Lafayette's
Music Room and The Playhouse on the Square is
available for lease. |
|

Next to Lafayette's/Playhouse is the
former T.G.I. Friday's, one of the first in America and the
anchor of Overton Square for many years. A recent
attempt to re-open a restaurant there didn't last long. |

Next to Friday's is the building housing Palm
Court and La Chardonnay.

ice skating rink used to be. |

The rear of the building, facing the parking
lot, still has several active shops. |

If you notice closely, the map of Madison and Cooper shows one part of the
streets built as a rounded corner. A similar feature was found several
miles south at Cooper and Young. This was built to accomodate the old
street cars that ran from downtown out to the Fairgrounds.

I grew up in Memphis until the age of twelve living part of that time at 90
N Cooper. My Dad had his Dental practice in the front part of our house.
In the late 1980's I returned to Memphis as a manager of the TGI Friday's
on the Square. We closed Friday's to re-model and the parent company would
not let the franchisee re-open. The franchisee also owned Bombay Bicycle
Club, Gertrude's and Gonzalez's, a seafood restarant and Studebaker's on
the square as well as a restaurant out in Germantown. All were closed when
the TABC came in one day and said the owner had not paid any Alcohol taxes.
Seems he was from New York and disappeared with the cash. Anyway, there
was always something going on in the Square. The merchant's association
had their own security group run by a LT from the Memphis PD.
