The maps below come from the original sales brochure
for the Scenic Hills neighborhood. The date is
somewhere between 1959 and 1961.
Map #1: Frayser & Raleigh

Click map to enlarge. Notice that Hollywood has not
yet been extended across the Wolf River to James,
and New Allen Road is still a dotted line on the
right edge of Scenic Hills. Despite this, they were
already planning the northern loop of I-240 (here
called a "Middle Parkway") two decades before it was
completed. They were also planning an "Outer
Parkway" that would have been about where
Raleigh-Egypt is.
Map #2: Scenic Hills

Notice that Scotland was called Warford, the street
that now joins up with New Allen. New Allen was
still just a "Proposed Highway," and it was already
planned that it would extend south of Scenic
Highway, something it wouldn't do until the
Interstate was completed two decades later. Notice
also the shopping center planned for the open area
in the lower left--the lot is still empty today.
Inside the neighborhood, Carnoustie and Invergarry
were both slated to cut through to Whitney;
otherwise the plan was carried out as pictured here.

I have wonderful memories about Scenic Hills from the early 60's. It was a
cozy, tree filled area with hills and nice neighbors.

Note the city limits on the first map. Frayser was annexed in 1958, so this
must have been printed prior to that.
I lived on the dotted line part of North Hollywood, between Whitney and
Frayser Blvd. in the late 60's. When they clear-cut the field across the
street to build the subdivision, we would shoot rockets and hike down to
the railroad tracks.
I love to drive through Scenic Hills. It is still a beautiful area, and the
folks I know who live there are still nice.
