1960s Raleigh

Until 1966, the public library was the old
white house on the south side of James Road just west Austin Peay.
For photos and the complete story, see
1950s
Raleigh.
-
Dr. Walter Verner was a popular family doctor in
Raleigh across the parking lot from the Rexall's
Drugstore.
-
Raleigh's first shopping center on Austin Peay had
Kroger, Thrasher's Fabrics, Shainberg’s, Kress,
Walgreen’s, and Western Auto.
It was torn down and replaced with a K-Mart.
-
Other Raleigh businesses: Rexall Drugstore, Shakey’s
Pizza, The Minute Man.
-
In the late sixties, the closest hand-dipped ice cream
was "Dipper Dan the Ice Cream Man" at the corner of
Macon & National.

I used to ride my bike down to the Kress, which had fabric and patterns
back in those days. It was actually cool to sew your own clothes back then,
and I certainly did as a young girl. What a treat to go to Kress to look
at patterns and create my own look!
There was also a shoe store there, where I had my first crush on a cute guy
selling shoes.
I remember well the Raleigh Drugstore. My brother worked there, his future
wife, and many friends from Raliegh Baptist Church, once it moved next to
the church in the 70's.
Fun site....takes me back!
