Paramount Theater

Eastgate Shopping Center facing White Station

Now a Stein Mart

As seen in this 1970s aeriel photo, the Paramount had a large white rectangle sign across the front that displayed the movie titles. The theater was originally a single screen, but was divided into two screens in the 1970s, after which the sign sported the large red numbers "1" and "2" with the movie titles of the two screeens.

To the right of the theater was a Shoney's, which included drive-in service under the white canopies visible next to the railroad tracks.

Below: Today Stein Mart takes up the space occupied by the theater and the Shoney's.

Movies shown at the Paramount Theater:

The Sound of Music (1965)
2
001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
The Omen (1976)
Star Wars (1977)

I worked at the Paramount during high school and most of college. 1977-1981. It was so much fun. We had no cash registers..you added the stuff up as people were throwing their orders at you. One of the best memories was Mr. Baily letting us kids (we were all 16, 17) stay to watch Aliens after the theater closed one night so the projectionists (Jack and Pat) could test out the new Dolby sounds. There was the night somebody forgot to put their car in park and crashed into the theater after hours. We became a twin theater after that.

I remember seeing most of my movies at the Paramount.... My first "car" date was to the theater, then to Shoney's for a hot fudge cake. Simple times.

The Paramount will always be special to me because I saw Star Wars there for the first time.

They also showed Raiders of the Lost Ark there in 1981.

Let's not forget "The Blue Max" or "Ice Station Zebra" or "Sex and the Single Girl".

We thought that this theatre and Shoney's were the greatest thing since sliced bread. You could walk to the shopping center, see a movie, go eat and then visit "Charley the Wooley Monkey" in Katz Drug Store.

Have to admit...one guy would pay to get in. Then, move up front to open the emergency doors to let in friends, as the house lights dimmed and the movie came on. Those big curtains were great!

I know I saw Star Wars there in its original release, and I think that 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984) played at the Paramount. I remember that film starting before the curtains had opened with the distorted voice of Dave Bowman sounding in the dark theater "My God ...it's full of stars!" 'Bout made me jump! Only then did the picture actually start, to the strains of Also Sprach Zarathustra.

I recall going to the Shoney's Big Boy next door quite a few times as a kid, too. They had Shoney Bear comics (and stuffed bears), and the Big Boy fiberglas statue out front. They had a pretty good Big Mac style double decker burger called the "All American" that was topped off with an American flag toothpick.

And speaking of large fiberglas statues, does anyone remember the giant grocery clerk at Giant supermarket just across White Station from the Paramount theater? As I recall, the statue looked very much like this one in Metropolis, Illinois ( http://www.sillyamerica.com/blog/2009/05/big-john-grocery-clerk-part-2/ ) who I suspect is a repainted giant himself. I wonder when the Memphis giant left town?
